Sunday Night Reflections

Two great services today. This morning, missionary Larryon Truman spoke about his ministry in Nicaragua. Along with the work of planting churches and preparing pastors, he and his wife are the national directors for Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames. God is using this presentation to reach many people in Nicaragua. Tonight we continued our study in the book of James. We looked at this passage in which James deals head-on with the issue of judging others. We also took the time to look at other Biblical passages that speak about this. I didn't get through all the material I was hoping to cover so we'll have to have a part two. So my wife was digging furiously through her purse looking for her drivers license. She had found my license in her purse but she couldn't find hers. "I gave it back to you", I assured her. (I had borrowed it to make a copy of it and of my license to give to an insurance agent.) Still, I decided to check my wallet and, sure enough, I

Jordan Holden

This morning, my family and I attended the funeral of Jordan Holde n . Jordan's mom is my wife's colleague at Cornerstone Christian School. She has taught all our children, and is an excellent math teacher. Jordan was Kelli's classmate for many years, since they were children. In fact, there is a story going around that Kelli broke Jordan's heart in the second grade. Jordan died tragically, and much too young. The last time I spoke to him was last year when he came up to me at the mall and gave me a handshake. He was very courteous and friendly. When he walked away, I asked my wife, "Who was that?" It had been a couple of years since I had seen him, and I just hadn't recognized him. He had really grown up--but he was still much too young to die. As I was at the funeral, I remembered these words from Ecclesiastes: Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties. After all, everyone dies— so the living should take this to heart. Sorrow is b

Missionary Larryon Truman

I'm really looking forward to having Missionary Larryon Truman at Solid Rock Church Sunday morning. Larryon and his wife, Aida, are missionaries to Nicaragua. It's always exciting to hear missionaries talk of their work on the mission field because missions is truly the heartbeat of God. I can't wait to hear what God has to say to us.

Sunday Night Reflections

I think we set a record for the number of families that were out today on family trips. It's just that time of year, when families take advantage of the kids being off from school to get away for a few days. Thank God for family trips! What a great service we had tonight! Mario Escobedo did a great job teaching from Psalm 1:3. The message he spoke was powerful and so timely! Wow! And the prayer time after the service was beautiful. I heard many comments after the service about how much our people enjoyed the message. I hope this is not the last time Mario speaks at Solid Rock! We're having another special guest this next Sunday morning. Larryon Truman, missionary to Nicaragua, will be at Solid Rock to give us an update on the work on the field, and to preach God's Word. I'm looking forward to seeing him and his family again. I'm going to wash my truck this week. (If you were in church tonight, you know what I'm talking about!) Have a great week!

Dr. John Townsend: Definition of depression

As a follow-up to Sunday morning's message on depression, I'm going to post a series of videos for the next few days by Dr. John Townsend. Here's the first one. Sunday Night Reflections

Thanks to all of you who participated in our bake sale today. Many of you made some wonderful baked goods, and others of you bought them! Thank you! We will use the profits to help pay for some of the neighborhood children to come to our annual Mega Sports Camp which will be held August 4-8. What a great service we had tonight! It was obvious that God planned the service differently than what I had planned. He has so much more to give us than we tend to expect. I'm really looking forward to having Mario Escobedo at Solid Rock next Sunday night. Mario is an Instructor at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie where he also works as an Institutional Research Specialist. He is also finishing up his Ph.D in Religion with a concentration in Old Testament studies from Baylor University. Mario will preach what I believe will be a timely and important message that everyone needs to hear, especially our young people. Don't miss it! Time to get to bed. I have a 7:00 appo

Mega Sports Camp

It's almost time for our annual Mega Sports Camp! The Mega Sports Camp is an outreach that teaches soccer, basketball, baseball, and cheerleading skills along with creative Bible lessons. This year, we'd like to offer the Mega Sports Camp free of charge to the children in our neighborhood. In order to do that, we're asking members of the the Solid Rock family to sponsor a child for $10.00. You can sponsor as many children as you want. Also, we're having a bake sale this Sunday after the morning service to help raise funds so we can offer the Mega Sports Camp free of charge. If you like to bake, you can really make a difference by baking a cake, or pie, or cookies to sell. If you don't bake, bring a little extra cash to buy something. By the way, if anyone bakes a sugar-free pie, I'll buy it! The Mega Sports Camp will be held August 4-8, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

Thinking outside the box

Wow, talk about thinking outside the box! This is one way of finding a church to pastor I never would have thought of. (Not that I'm thinking of finding another church to pastor!) Pastor is selling himself on ebay!

R & R

We're spending a couple of days visiting Lillian's mom in La Grange. I love coming here...it's so quiet and peaceful, and beautiful. It gives me a chance to really rest, and to catch up on my reading. I only wish we could stay longer.

Sunday Night Reflections

Boy, talk about a full weekend! I preached four times this weekend: Friday night, Saturday morning, Sunday morning, and Sunday night. I'm really tired. I don't know if I'll get up early to jog tomorrow. Right now, the thought of sleeping in sounds pretty good! We're taking a quick trip this week to see my mother-in-law. Leaving tomorrow and returning Wednesday morning. I'm looking forward to some down time with my reading material. I miss not being able to take all the clan with us but the older our kids get, the harder it is to coordinate our schedules. So it'll just be me and Lillian and Ryan. This past Wednesday, in our InterMission service, I introduced our fall campaign, Nothing's too Hard for God. It'll be an eight-week sermon series tied to a 10-week small group session. We're going to talk about forgiveness, loneliness, relationships, illness, fear, finances, loss, and addiction. It'll be a great opportunity to reach out to friends and

Try not to laugh too hard

So we finally gave in and bought a Wii. It turns out that it's a lot of fun. Unfortunately, my kids were having fun at my expense. I was trying out the boxing and had no idea Bethany was video taping me. The jerky movement at the end of the clip is Bethany shaking because she was laughing so hard.

Gas-saving tips

Dave Ramsey has some great gas-saving tips in his June newsletter. Here are a few: Don’t carry a lot of stuff in your trunk. The more weight you have in the trunk, the harder the engine has to work to move it and the more gas it uses. Don’t make fast turns or sudden stops. Again, that’s making the engine work harder. Leave earlier so you can drive slower. If you drive 55 miles an hour instead of 65, that can save you 2 miles a gallon. That adds up! Click here to read the rest of the article.
